When to Replace the Fiber Laser Lens and Protective Window

The protective window and lenses in the cutting head sit in the path of the laser beam. When dirty or burnt, cut quality drops and the optics and head can be damaged. This article summarizes the signs and the right approach.

What Are the Protective Window and Lens?

In the cutting head, the beam passes through several optical parts. On the outside, closest to the nozzle, is the protective window; it shields the inner optics from spatter and fume during cutting. It is treated like a consumable and is the most frequently replaced part.

Further inside are the collimating and focusing lenses. They are very sensitive and expensive, and are normally cleaned or replaced only by a knowledgeable person or service. If the protective window is looked after well, the inner optics stay healthy for a long time.

Signs It Is Time to Replace

  • Drop in cut quality: rough edges, dross, uneven or slanted cuts.
  • Piercing problems: trouble piercing or cuts stopping halfway.
  • Stains, burns or cracks on the glass: spots, black marks or cracks seen when holding the window up to the light.
  • Head heating: the cutting head getting hotter than normal, or a head warning.
  • Lower cutting speed: no longer cutting as before at the same speed.

These signs can have other causes (nozzle, gas, focus setting). Checking the protective window and nozzle first is the easiest step.

Proper Cleaning and Replacement

  • Switch the machine off and isolate power. Work in a clean, dust-free, well-lit place.
  • Do not touch with bare hands; use clean gloves or finger cots.
  • Clean the glass only with the method and materials the manufacturer recommends. Beyond light contamination, replacing is safer than cleaning; do not clean burnt or scratched glass, replace it.
  • Fit the new glass the right way round with its seal and check sealing.
  • Leave work on inner lenses to an authorized person.

What Sets the Replacement Interval?

  • Workload: on a multi-shift machine the glass gets dirty more often.
  • Gas and air quality: wet, oily or dirty air ruins the glass quickly. If you cut with air, compressor, dryer and filter selection is important.
  • Material: oily, rusty, coated or high-spatter material contaminates the glass faster.
  • Number of pierces: jobs with many holes create more spatter.
  • Nozzle condition: a deformed nozzle disturbs gas flow and increases spatter.

Rather than a fixed date, the safest habit is checking the glass at the start of each day. For general care, see our fiber laser maintenance checklist. For questions, write to us.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should the protective window be replaced?

When stains, burns or cracks appear, cut quality drops or the head shows a warning. Checking every day is better than a fixed interval.

Should the protective window be cleaned or replaced?

Light contamination can be cleaned with the manufacturer's recommended method. Burns, scratches or permanent stains mean replacement.

Can I replace the lens myself?

A trained operator can replace the protective window. The collimating and focusing lenses are sensitive and should be handled by an expert.

Why does the protective window get dirty quickly?

Wet or oily air, a damaged nozzle, oily or rusty sheet and many pierces are the most common causes.
